Spring Cleaning Detox

So whilst you are thinking about throwing out old clunky dusty old furniture and clothes, take a think about how you are going to clean up your insides after the long cold winter…  Months of hearty meaty stews, pastas, wine, hot chocolates, bread and cheese have probably cluttered up your inners, and even increased your own internal storage systems (if you know what I mean…).  While in winter you can cover it all up and pretend all is still clean, healthy and svelte underneath the layers, all it takes is the first warm weekend for the blinkers to get ripped off and realization to kick in.
Now, you can’t guzzle soap and shampoo, detergent and bleach to expect to get the same clean feeling on the outside that you want on the inside… So how?  Well, there are a number of cleansing programs and products available at the moment, try just water fasting which is a fairly extreme way to let you body do its own cleaning.  You can try surviving on lemon juice/syrup concoctions  or you can try to do a juice cleanse.  There are definitely pros and cons to each type of cleansing you do, but there are more nourishing ways than others too.
A juice cleanse is method of cleansing that not only uses the body’s own toxin removal system, but is able to enhance the process through the natural properties of good organic produce.  Fruits and vegetables should be part of everyone’s daily diet, and not just once a day, at least twice a day! And juicing is a fabulous way to get huge doses of those naturally occurring infection, cancer fighting antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.  Just think – your lunch salad has maybe 1 carrot, half a cucumber, handful of baby spinach, 2 tomatoes, some fresh herbs, ¼ capsicum and a sprinkle of seeds.  But juice all this up and get around 300mls of juice which is just over a cup.  That might feel like a snack, but probably won’t feel like a meal.  BUT double those amounts and you get a hearty satisfying juice, THEN do that for at least 5 times a day – WOAH – your body will be so dosed up on fresh raw goodness that it won’t know what is happening!
Now, those with a bent for thinking about the logistics of HOW, will be thinking to themselves, but that is a lot of fruit and veg I have to buy, then store in the fridge, then juice, and then….clean and wash up.  And you would be right!  It can be a mission.  There are certainly people out there that can help you, well, do it all for you and deliver you a fresh little esky each morning for your cleanse.  But it also something you can do yourself.  Here are some recipes you can try yourself at home.  Dust off the juicer, get the markets/grocery store and get stocked up!
Green Juice
1 cucumber
2 apples
1 pear
1 bunch kale
1 lemon
Orange Juice
3 carrots
1 orange
3 sticks celery
1 cucumber
Pink Juice
½ beetroot
2 carrots
2 apples
1 lemon
Small piece of ginger
Try these yourself at home – they are delicious, nourishing and packed full of rich antioxidant goodness to get your insides spring sparkling!  If this does seem like too much, check out Schkinny Maninny in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.  They can juice up and deliver for your juice cleanse, book online at www.schkinnymaninny.com.au or on 1300 021 601.

The benefits of meditation

There is now a wealth of scientific and medical research supporting the beneficial effects of a regular meditation practice, although once you have been meditating for a while you won’t give a hoot about the studies because you will have your own proof of how wonderful you feel when you meditate.
But it can be helpful to acknowledge some of the benefits reported in meditation studies including:
• Lower blood pressure and heart rate, meaning it’s highly effective as an anti-stress therapy and has zero side affects
• Improved immune system, which might mean less colds and flu, but also shown to be a powerful partner with traditional treatments in fighting more serious illnesses
• Improved neural coordination and potential to change the neuroplasticity of the brain, making us more efficient thinkers and happier people as well
• Heightened activity in the left prefrontal cortex of the brain, the area associated with relaxation and happiness
• Improved concentrative ability and activation of brain waves associated with the state of consciousness in which higher level thinking and insight occurs
Recent studies have also reported that meditation could slow the ageing process; increasing the production of DHEA the only hormone that reduces as we grown older and a powerful anti-ageing hormone, increasing production of melatonin a powerful antioxidant that slows cell damage and improves energy, and decreasing cortisol the toxin that causes thinning of the skin.
Medical research estimates as much as 80-85% of illness and disease is stress related, and stress (mental, emotional, and physical) causes us to age.  Eva Selhub, MD, Medical Director of the Mind/Body Medical Institute says, “If we can affect the stress response, we can affect the aging process.” She says
“There`s a reason why experienced meditators live so long and look so young.”
We live in amazing times with a growing focus from the medical and scientific community on this ancient and time honoured practice.  People have been meditating for thousands of years because they know from their own experience the powerful benefits a regular meditation practice can have on their life and their health.
Try this short meditative exercise to immediately release some stress from your day:
FOUR DEEP BREATHS
Sit in a comfortable position and relax your body.
Take in a deep breath repeating "4" quietly to yourself on both the inhalation and exhalation.
On your next breath repeat "3 on the inhalation and exhalation.
On your next breath repeat "2" on the inhalation and exhalation.
And finally on your next breath repeat "1" on the inhalation and exhalation.
Then just sit for a moment and allow your breath to move easily to its own rhythm.

Top ten spas with awesome pools

Top ten spas with awesome pools
A dip in a pool can add that something special to a day spa experience, making your visit feel more like a holiday than a short lived indulgence
I am a pool before spa person; for me spending a hour having a paddle or simply lying in or beside the water before my treatment encourages me to start relaxing so that when my therapist calls my name I am already a bit spaced out and ready to reap the benefits of my treatment.
I can appreciate that other Spa Seekers like to extend their spa experience after their treatment and indulge in some pool therapy without worrying about being late for their appointment. Of course there’s nothing to say that you couldn’t jump in the pool before and after your treatment!
The majority of spas which have access to these amazing pools are located in fabulously luxurious hotel complexes, luckily most of the time you don’t have to be a hotel guest to use the day spa and as a day spa visitor you generally have unrestricted access to the swimming pool so make the most of it!
Here are the my spa guide top ten spas with awesome pools to inspire you to take the plunge at your next spa appointment
Please note we haven’t included day spas in mineral bathing complexes
1. Palazzo Versace QLD
As you would expect from Palazzo Versace, this pool is the ultimate in opulent elegance. The design is straight from ancient Rome while the service is pure Versace. With poolside cabanas available for visitors to enjoy private lounging in the Gold Coast sun, you can even book mani/pedi packages to enjoy without having to move from the pool.
2. Chuan Spa at the Langham QLD
When you combine a 15m salt pool, a zero edge jacuzzi and floor to ceiling views of the Melbourne CBD skyline and iconic Flinders Street Station you know you are in for something pretty amazing. This is one pool you simply must make time to relax in during your spa visit.
3. Isika, VIC
A short step out of Isika leds you directly to the pool at Crown Metropole, a true urban oasis overlooking Melbourne. This pool exudes style and sophistication with a vaulted ceiling and floor to ceiling windows on all sides making the most of the views you could easily lose hours here.
4. TheSpa at Werribee Mansion, VIC
Contemporary understated elegance describes the 17m indoor pool at Werribee Mansion perfectly. The pool mirrors the luxurious surroundings of TheSpa and provides a peaceful place to enjoy the calm before or after your treatment.
5. Hyatt Coolum, QLD
Largest spa in the southern hemisphere
6. Norbu Urban Retreat, VIC
Overhanging Chapel Street the indoor pool at The Olsen is nothing short of spectacular in its design. While the time away people watching from above - although I’m not sure i like the idea of shoppers below getting a glimpse of me in my bikini!
7. Spa Hayman, QLD
Hayman’s iconic pool is back open for business following the devastating hurricane in Feb 2011. Enjoy a post-spa cocktail at the pool before retreating to your Pool Wing room where you can enjoy the views of the pool and the Coral Sea beyond.
8. Villa Thalgo, NSW
With cathedral vaulted ceilings, classical columns and a view over a courtyard filled with gardenias you would be forgiven for thinking that you are lounging by a pool in the Italian countryside rather than in NSW.
9. Spa on Brougham, SA
10. Spa at the Adelphi, VIC what this pool lacks in size in makes up for in urban elegance. Situated on the rooftop of the Adelphi Hotel in the middle of Melbourne CBD you can chill out above the city which the world carries on its business below.
11. Wolgan Valley, NSW

Cruising Spa Seekers

I’ve always been a little fascinated by the idea of cruising. The idea of basically a small floating town, albeit a very luxurious town, complete with multiple restaurants, bars, theatres, shops and swimming pools but no way off for sometimes up to two days both repels and excites me. But having read recently about the rise of luxe day spas on cruise ships I find myself being strangely drawn to the idea. (No surprise there, I have yet to meet a day spa which I didn’t want to visit so why should a floating day spa be any different.)
Many cruising day spas are surpassing land based spas with their ultra luxurious surrounds, their state of the art, high tech treatments and their outstanding customer service,  so I thought it was about time my spa guide explore the times and tides of the cruising spa that float around Australian waters.
Aqua Health, Spa and Fitness Centre, Pacific Jewel
The largest floating spa in the southern hemisphere is aboard P&O Cruises’ Pacific Jewel. The Aqua Health, Spa and Fitness Centre offers spa and wellness treatments served with a spectacular ocean view. With steam rooms, saunas, whirlpools and relaxation areas a-plenty this is 1300 square meters of pure spa heaven. They have a licensed physician on board who provides full medi-spa services including Botox and Restylane so you could set foot on dry land looking younger than when you got on board! Book in for some acupuncture if you are struggling to find your sea legs and try a fire and ice manicure if you are looking to treat yourself to something a little different.
ShipShape day spas, Royal Caribbean
ShipShape® day spas are run by Elemis and are a feature of all Royal Caribbean (link http://www.royalcaribbean.com.au ) cruise ships. They offer an astonishing array of spa and wellness treatments including everything from yoga classes to hot stone massages and facials.  Their Voyager of the Seas liner will be the first ‘mega liner’ to be based in Australia from 2012 and houses the ShipShape® day spa as well as, of course, an ice skating rink, a full size basketball court, three swimming pools and a climbing wall.
AquaSpa, Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises (link) http://www.celebritycruises.com - offer a true celeb spa seeker experience at the AquaSpa® and Fitness Centres found aboard all their liners.  After you’ve enjoyed your entirely appropriate, Elemis Aroma Spa Seaweed Mask and massage you can have your teeth whitened and have a ‘freshen up’ with a touch of Botox or Restylane before heading to a sunset yoga class!  AquaSpa® even cater for teens with their YSpa services, perfect for any grumpy teens travelling with you. If you’re looking for a full on cruising spa retreat you can stay in an AquaSpa state room so you can be close the spa and have access to the Persian Garden with its rain shower, scented steam room and shower for the duration of your stay.
Unlike many cruising day spas you can book your spa appointments in before you climb aboard on the majority of Celebrity Cruise liners. This is great news if you want to continue a beauty regime, if you know your hair is going to need that trim in a couple of weeks or if you just want to make sure you don’t miss out on an appointment time during your cruise.
With all these amazing options a life on the ocean waves has never been better for Spa Seekers. Who wouldn’t want to while away the hours being massaged and manicured before stepping onto shore at a new location every other day. Maybe I’m coming round to the idea of cruising after all…
Have you had a spa experience on a cruise ship?
